Het was maar een blaadje!

Carl Pettersson was assessed a two-stroke penalty on the first hole of the final round of the 94th PGA Championship for a breach of Rule 13-4c when he moved a loose impediment lying in a lateral water hazard, while his ball was lying in the same hazard.

Zo begon een bericht dat de PGA of America nog tijdens de laatste ronde van het PGA Championship verspreidde.

De Zweed was de laatste ronde van het kampioenschap op drie slagen van Rory McIlroy begonnen, maar door één kleine regelfout groeide de achterstand op de Noord-Ier prompt met twee slagen.

Pettersson hit his tee shot into the lateral water hazard to the right of the fairway. Before making the stroke, he asked the walking official, Brad Gregory, if he was allowed to touch grass, in the hazard, with his club, prior to the stroke.

Pettersson was correctly informed that he could do so, provided that he did not ground the club in the hazard. In making his backswing, Pettersson’s club brushed the grass behind the ball (not a breach) and at the same time moved a leaf (loose impediment), in breach of the Rule.

Het was op de op de vertraagde en vergrote tv-beelden nauwelijks te zien, maar dat blad bewoog. Had Pettersson daar voordeel van? Nee, maar regel is regel.

Een blaadje, het was maar een blaadje!

‘A stupid rule’, zei CBS-verslaggever David Feherty toen Pettersson op de tee van vier werd verteld dat zijn par op hole een een double bogey was geworden.

Dat klinkt logisch, maar Feherty, die in 1991 voor Europa in de Ryder Cup uitkwam, weet ook wel dat je de grens ergens moet trekken. Eén blaadje maar! Dat vinden we dan goed. Maar als het er twee waren geweest? Of drie heel grote? Of een tak?

Greg Norman zei het in zijn topjaren vaak: ‘Nobody is bigger than the game itself’. En zo is het ook. En bij de ‘game’ horen nu eenmaal ook de golfregels.

Als u het PGA Championship heeft gevolgd, dan weet u waarschijnlijk ook dat Joost Luiten in ronde drie een strafslag kreeg. Hij had al het idee dat er op zestien iets niet goed was gegaan en meldde het voorval prompt.

Dit is wat de PGA ons daarover vertelde:

‘During the conclusion of the third round of the 94th PGA Championship, Joost Luiten was assessed a one-stroke penalty under Rule 14-4 for striking the ball more than once. In an attempt to tap in a very short putt, with a one-handed stroke, Luiten struck the ball with the putter. However, on his follow through, the heel of the putter brushed the ground, causing the toe of the putter to strike his moving ball a second time. 

Under Rule 14-4, “If a player’s club strikes the ball more than once in the course of making a stroke, the player must count the stroke and add a penalty stroke, making two strokes in all.” 

Luiten brought this incident to the attention of officials in scoring and requested an opportunity to review video evidence of his stroke at the 16th hole. The facts were confirmed after review of video and the one-stroke penalty resulted in a third-round score of 75 and a three-round total of 219.
